Once again, I had the chance to eat at the Meat Plus Cafe in Subic. This time, I tried their Meat Plus Burger. In my opinion, it's the best local burger we have even if pitted against Wham! or Hotshots. It's so damn juicy. They grill the patties so I guess that's one of the reasons why the flavor is locked. The cheese also complements the burger well. Other entrees we tried are the steaks.

Who says a Jollibee burger can't be a gourmet burger? I was never a fan of their burgers especially when decided to even downgrade their burgers into dressing it up with that "horrible" pink sauce. But with the right garneshing and more traditional condiments, the yumburger would really live up to its name. Using the garneshings found in our fridge, I managed to transform the "cheap" burger to not only a "pretty" looking one but also upgraded its taste.

To do this, I requested to have the "evil" pink dressing removed (sometimes it's an excuse so they have to prepare this snack fresh off the kitchen). I added some lettuce (not the iceberg type), a slice of tomato (the type you normally see in pictures) and two large onion rings. For the condiments, I put ketchup and mustard.

It turned out pretty good. Although it's not "gourmet" gourmet, it's defintely a huge improvement. Beside the taste, I am more delighted with how the yumburger looked after all the "upgrades" I managed to do. It's visual appeal would trick you about how it really tastes. I guess this "project" proves the phrase "looks can be deceiving" once more.

Piadina's Pesto

I decided to try out Piadina's famous pesto pasta last Saturday. Normally, a pesto pasta is dry. Piadina's pesto pasta is the saucy type. I have high expectations for this pasta. Unfortunately, it didn't particularly appeal to my taste bud. I know pesto is supposedly "herb" based and taste kinda like plant leaves. Don't get me wrong, I like how a pesto sauce smells and that's why I became interested in trying out this alternative. I am not sure if the pasta they've used already has a flavour in itself, but the overall taste of the dish came out too strong for my taste buds.

The pizza slice that came with the meal is a whole different story. I really liked it. The taste reminded me of Amici pizza. It's a simple Margherita pizza with just the basil leaves as the topping. Since the crust is thin, it's really tasty. I also liked the sauce. Have I known that the pesto pasta would disappoint me, I would have just ordered two more slices of the pizza.

Overall, I'd recommend their pizzas (although I have yet to try out the other pasta dishes). I believe you can order a box for 250 pesos.

Sbarro Leftover galore

It was a bad decision that I've eaten a really heavy breakfast last Saturday. Supposedly, it would have been another monster of a Sbarro meal but I am full and so I just had to bring most of the food items back home (although I couldn't resist the white pizza and even consumed more than half of the serving size).

Lunch time was: a slice of white cheese pizza, bowl of tomato sauce (the killer sauce for me though you pay an extra 26 pesos) and a tiny portion of the leftover pasta (originally half-white and half-tomato sauce).

Dinner time was: a slice of all-meat pan pizza, a really tiny portion of the pasta leftover and a fraction of the garlic bread

The pizza is also good. I really love the tiny processed meatballs and the ham.

PS: the pizzas are already cut into smaller sizes but they still look real huge (not only in the pic). I guess a Sbarro Pizza can be cut into at least three smaller serving sizes so for the price it's definitely worht it.

Cello's

A new branch of Cello's Doughnuts and Dips opened in Greenhills just recently I think. It's located at the Unimart Building fronting the Annapolis Carpark very near the entrance of the Virra Mall. Finally, there's a branch that is a little more convinient for me. The first time I've had a taste of it was way back in 2005. I bought two boxes of 6's and they still have an M&M's doughnut. I see that they have removed it from the menu, which I think is a bad decision. It's one of the better flavours I've tasted and it's unique. I guess it's kinda pricey to keep it available with the cost of the chocolate and all.

The box of 6 that I bought originally consists of 4 Oreo, 1 cheese and 1 strawberry.

I also tried the Cheese flavour.

It's best to try the doughnuts upon order. My sister said that she couldn't tell the difference between the Oreo and the Cheese flavours. I guess it's because it's no longer "fresh" and the doughnuts are dipped first in a "sweet solution" before the flavours are added.

All in all, I'd say the dough and the dips (which I never got to try out) are the main selling points of Cello's. Against its competition, it lacks variety in its flavours so I think they should add more unique ones (bad decision to remove M&Ms).

Whoppin'

I thought the Whopper has already declined in quality and volume. So in the past months, I decided to stay away from it and wolf down on the better burgers around. But lately, I decided to give the Whopper another try and I was surprised. Since it opened its first branch at Galleria in 1997, I had been obssessed with this burger. It's the first of its kind that I've tasted and it introduced me to the concept of more than 1/4 lb burger patty.

When I ate the burger above, I was happy that the size of the patty is still comparable to the one I when I first tried it. The tomatoes are also huge and yummy. I wasn't able to consume the whole burger and I had to take home the other half.

For the price of 125 for a single patty and 165 for a double patty, it's well worth it. It already comes with a bottomless drink and fries.
